With more than 300 professional victories, he is undoubtedly the greatest professional cyclist ever.
During his career (1965 - 1978) he won the Tour de France 5 times and was nicknamed "The Cannibal", because of his relentless hunger for victory.
He also won the Giro d'Italia 5 times and the Vuelta a España once.
Merckx broke the world hour record in 1972.
He was Belgian Sportsman of the Year each year from 1969 to 1974.
