New musea and exhibitions
In 2014 the centenarian commemoration of the First World War starts. A lot of cities and communities in Flanders are renovating their heritages sites and museums or are preparing events for the period 2014-2018:
A new In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres as an introduction to a visit of the whole war zone to other sites and museums. The perfect place to start your visit!
A new expo “The Battle of Passchendaele” and a new trench-experience in Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 in Zonnebeke.
The complete story “behind the front” in Poperinge: the Lijssenthoek Cemetery where hospitalised people or workers including some from China are burried, the town hall with its cells and execution post for deserters, the park and monument to remember the Chinese workers and the newly renovated Talbot House, a former club for soldiers
The Yser Tower in Diksmuidewith 22 floors dedicated tot the war and an impressive view over the WWI battlefields from the top floor.
The new visitor’s center in Newport whichwill tell the story of the flooding (view history)
Unesco approved
Flanders wants to propose to UNESO in 2014 the recognition of the ‘memorial landscapes and sites of World War I’ as a world heritage site.
Flanders is collaborating closely with Wallonia and France to draw attention to and to strengthen the universal value of this UNESCO nomination. The UNESCO nomination is the culmination of an integrated strategy designed to ensure the long-term protection of the heritage of the First World War.
Events
Flanders is currently preparing events that commemorate the Great War. The program will be presented in 2012.
