Some say that life is looking forward from one holiday to the other. And that working should be only considered as the time in between those happy holiday times. Not a bad philosophy, but this is slightly different for the pastry chef Servaas Van Mullem and his family.
Travelling is exploring, feeding all senses, feeling that you are alive and just doing only that what makes you happy! Travelling is discovering and finding true local treasures, different places than your typical global commercialized Starbucks, or McDonalds. When you look closely around in Flanders you will notice local craftsmanship gems are all over the place.
In this case when you look around in Bruges you will discover that the pastry shop of Servaas Van Mullem is such a gem. It is a family run pastry shop that goes back to the 19th century. To run a family business and be an expert in the pastry discipline the happy times of the Van Mullem generations took and take place in the pastry shop. They live to create and serve only the best Bruges typical delicacies. For many years the brothers Ernest and Honoré Van Mullem were thé best known pastry chefs in and around Bruges. They even had the famous Flemish writer Stijn Streuvels as a trainee in their shop in 1888. It is only since 2004, 40 years after pastry chef Herman Van Mullem retired, that grandson Servaas and his wife Caroline reopened the shop with its original activity. The young couple gave the antique interior a classy face-lift and opened, like in the good old days, an eating saloon in the pastry shop. You can taste and buy real delicacies such as the Palmier cookies or the Delice chocolate cake.
Or you can switch into a high gear and start your day with a deluxe breakfast at Servaas VM: freshly baked biscuits and a little bottle of bubbles. That’s the holiday spirit!
